  • Helpful Utilities

Anxiety 1.0
Anxiety (free) is a utility for Mac OS X 10.5 that displays iCal and Mail to-dos without requiring you to launch either application. It is simple, sleek, and stays out of the way while keeping a list of your tasks close at hand.

Commenteer 1.0
Limit Point Software's Commenteer (donationware) is a utility for managing comments that are attached to files. It can list comments, erase or set comments, use clipboard text for comments, and import comments. It can also add comments to the beginning or end of existing comments. Just drop a folder or collection of files onto Commenteer to process them.

MacTracker 5.0.4
Ian Page's MacTracker is a free utility that shows almost every detail about every Macintosh and Apple product ever made. In addition, it lists the dates each product was introduced and discontinued, its code name, original price, related Apple KnowledgeBase article numbers, as well as its original operating system, drives, ports, video support, upgrade paths, and a zillion other details. It also provides the support status of Apple's latest "vintage" and "obsolete" products, a real-world speed comparison among recent models, and a Notes area to record your own data such as serial numbers, purchase date, warranty coverage, etc.

MenuMeters 1.3
Sometimes when transferring data across a network or the Internet, it's difficult to tell if anything's happening. MenuMeters (free) adds a small display to your menu bar that can indicate several things, including the speed of current uploads and downloads. We use it to see how fast our data is being transferred over AirPort, and whether something is communicating with our Mac, such as a backup program. It has several other useful features, such as monitoring FireWire, Bluetooth and Ethernet data transfers, keeping track of the Peak Rate and Total Data transfers for each one. Optional features (available in its System Preference pane) include: a CPU meter, which is helpful when you suspect that an application is eating up your processor cycles; a Disk Activity meter, including a menu of your mounted volumes that lets you Open or Eject them at will; and a Memory meter that can not only show you how your RAM is being used, but also its history of use.

Silk Icons 1.3
Mark James' Silk Icons (free) is a set of more than 700 very smooth icons for use on websites. Each one measures 16x16 pixels, in PNG format. Containing a large variety of icons, you're sure to find something that tickles your fancy. The collection is impressive and useful!

SimpleViewer iPhoto Plugin 1.0
Luke Burton's SimpleViewer (free) is a plug-in for iPhoto that makes it one-click easy to export a collection of photos as an elegant interactive slideshow for your website. After running its installer, you simply select some photos in iPhoto, choose File> Export… and click on the SimpleViewer tab in the Export dialog box. Select a theme (Simple Viewer, Postcard Viewer, or Auto Viewer) and watch it export files to your selected folder. You can then upload that folder to your Web server, and point visitors to its URL.

Smart Trash 1.1.3
Smart Trash ($10 shareware) does what Mac OS X should already do: it lets you choose what to delete from the Trash, rather than deleting all files from all volumes when you Empty the Trash. Smart Trash adds a new menu to the menu bar that lets you delete specific files, all files, or only files that are in the Trash on specific volumes.

Tree Size 2.1
MonkeyBread Tree Size (free) is a utility that simply lists every folder and file on your hard drive, along with its size. It's useful for figuring out what's taking up space on your hard drive.
